Pembroke Welsh Corgis - Breed History
Pembroke Welsh Corgis have a vague history. The origin of this breed offers tales and legends to believe. As one of the legends goes, two children tending their family's cattle on royal lands found a pair of puppies that looked like foxes. At home, they were told that the dogs were a gift from the fairies. As Welsh legends have it, the fairies would use the little dogs to pull their carriages or as mounts for them to ride into battle. As the little puppies grew, they learned to help their humans watch over their cattle. This task became a responsibility for their descendants for centuries.
The breed may have descended from Swedish Vallhunds that were brought to Wales by Vikings in the 800s. "Corgi" is the Celtic word for dog. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was developed in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was recognized by the Kennel Club of the United Kingdom in 1934. This was the time when the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was also recognized as a separate breed, apart from the Cardiganshire Corgi, its cousin.
Health Issues:
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are prone to back disorders, glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts. Hip dysplasia has also been reported in the breed. Consult your breeder and veterinarian for other conditions in Pembroke Welsh Corgis.
